Crombie Po, San
   (?-1946)
   Karen (Kayin) leader, best known for his 1928 Burma and the Karens. After a medical education in the United States, he returned to Burma in 1894 and worked as a civil servant until 1902. Appointed a member of Burma's Legislative Council in 1915, he emerged as the principal spokesmen for the Karens in negotiations over future constitutional arrangements, including a legally recognized special status for the community in the legislature. He was a strong advocate of a "Karen country," separate from Burma and under British protection. Karens consider him to be a major figure in their modern history, and his book was reprinted in 2001.
